Majority of UN General Assembly backs end to US blockade of Cuba

United Nations, Oct 29 (EFE). – The UN General Assembly approved on Wednesday by 165 votes in favor, 7 against, and 12 abstentions, a non-binding resolution against US sanctions on Cuba.

“The blockade is a policy of collective punishment,” Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez told the assembly before the vote.

“It flagrantly, massively, and systematically violates the human rights of Cubans. It makes no distinction between social sectors or economic actors,” he added.

US sanctions have been in place for 63 years; Cuba has presented the non-binding resolution to end the blockade since 1992.

Every year, it receives almost unanimous support from the international community. In 2024, it achieved 187 votes in favor of ending the blockade, with only two votes against, from the US and Israel, in recent years.

However, in 2025, detractor countries included the US, Israel, Argentina, Paraguay, North Macedonia, Ukraine, and Hungary, which voted against the resolution.

Abstentions included Ecuador, Latvia, and Costa Rica, among others.

Deputy US Ambassador to the UN, Jeff Bartos, said a vote in support of “this regime gives it the excuse or seeks to wash its hands of any culpability for its financial crisis and continue to play the blame game instead of implementing meaningful reforms.”

“The United States will continue to promote accountability for the communist regime, and their reprehensible behavior on and off the island,” he added. EFE
