Seoul (EFE).– A strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Japan on Sunday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami alert for Iwate Prefecture, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported.
The quake hit at 5:03 p.m. local time (08:03 GMT) off Iwate’s coast, shaking parts of the prefecture and neighboring Miyagi, where tremors reached level 4 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale, which measures surface shaking rather than magnitude.
The tsunami warning is at the lowest alert level, with waves of up to one meter expected, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said.
“Please pay close attention to further information, as the tsunami could be larger than expected,” Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi wrote on X, adding that aftershocks were also possible. “Please remain alert for strong tremors.”
Japan, located along the seismically active Pacific “Ring of Fire,” experiences frequent earthquakes, and its infrastructure is designed to withstand major tremors. EFE
