Russia rejects possibility of a US attack and increased tariffs on Iran’s partners

Moscow (EFE).- Russia rejected on Tuesday both the threat of a potential United States military attack on Iranian territory and the possibility of increased tariffs on the Islamic Republic’s trading partners.

“Threats of new military attacks against the territory of the Islamic Republic made by Washington are categorically inadmissible,” said Foreign Affairs Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova in a statement on the ministry’s website.

The diplomat warned of dire consequences for the Middle East and international security if any power, although she did not explicitly mention the US, takes advantage of disturbances instigated from outside as an excuse to repeat the Jun. 2025 attack by Israel and the US.

“We also firmly refute attempts to blackmail Iran’s foreign partners with increased tariffs,” she added.

Moscow considers that “external forces” are attempting to use the tactics of “color revolutions” (popular uprisings) to “destabilize and destroy the Iranian state.”

“We strongly condemn inflammatory external interference in Iran’s internal political processes,” said Zakharova, who stressed that the Islamic authorities have shown a willingness to engage in “constructive dialogue” to overcome the negative consequences of hostile Western policies.

Zakharova also noted that the decrease in protests in recent days suggests a gradual stabilization of the situation, supported by the thousands of Iranians who have shown their support for the Ayatollahs’ regime.

As of Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced the cancellation of dialogue with Iranian authorities until “the senseless killing of protesters STOPS” amid rallies shaking the country. He assured demonstrators that “HELP IS ON ITS WAY.”

“Iranian patriots, KEEP PROTESTING! (…) I have canceled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The US head of state warned on Monday that any country that does business with Iran will be punished with a 25% tariff. “This decision is final” and “takes effect immediately,” he posted on his Truth Social account.

On Monday, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu condemned external interference in Iran’s affairs during a phone call with Iranian Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who reappeared at the Kremlin on Monday after being absent for nearly two weeks due to the Christmas holidays, has refrained from commenting on the situation in Iran for the time being. EFE
