Kremlin says Putin invited by Trump to join Gaza peace council

Moscow, Jan 19 (EFE).- Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is invited by US President Donald Trump to join a Peace Council that would oversee the formation of a new government in Gaza, the Kremlin said Monday.

“President Putin has indeed received an offer through diplomatic channels to join this Board of Peace. We are currently studying all the details of this proposal,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said during a press conference.

“We hope to contact the US side to clarify all the details,” Peskov said in response to a question from Russia’s official TASS news agency.

Earlier in the day, Putin convened a meeting of Russia’s Security Council. The Kremlin did not disclose the agenda.

According to earlier announcements, the peace council would include former British Prime Minister Tony Blair; US Secretary of State Marco Rubio; White House envoy Steve Witkoff; and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law.

Trump has also invited Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Argentine President Javier Milei to join the body.

The council’s formation follows the White House announcement of the second phase of Trump’s peace plan for Gaza. The plan calls for the creation of a technocratic government in the Gaza Strip and the disarmament of the militant group Hamas.

The White House said additional details will be announced during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where Trump is expected to speak this week. The information will concern the countries contributing to the International Stabilization Force.

The a UN-mandated multinational force is intended to ensure security and oversee the demilitarization of Gaza, as outlined in Trump’s peace plan. EFE
