1 person dead, 4 others seriously injured in a train accident in Barcelona

Barcelona (EFE).- Four people were seriously injured, and 33 others were treated by medical teams following the accident on Tuesday night when a retaining wall collapsed, killing the driver.

The accident occurred on a commuter train between the towns of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and Gelida, some 40 kilometers (24 miles) from Barcelona, on a day of heavy rain throughout Catalonia in northeastern Spain.

The accident occurred two days after a collision between two trains in Córdoba, southern Spain, for reasons that are still unknown, which caused the deaths of over 40 people.

Claudi Gallardo, the head of intervention of the Generalitat Fire Department, told the media that the retaining wall collapsed around 9:00 pm, possibly due to recent rainfall.

The wall fell onto the first wagon of the commuter train, deforming it and trapping most of the affected passengers inside.

The train driver died in the crash, and 37 passengers were treated by emergency medical teams. Four of the passengers were evacuated in serious condition to healthcare centers.

The Medical Emergency System (SEM) dispatched 20 ambulances to the area to evacuate the injured to Moisès Broggi, Bellvitge, and Vilafranca hospitals.

The train was on the R4 Cercanías line and had departed from Sant Vicenç de Calders, heading to Barcelona.

The Generalitat Fire Department mobilized 75 personnel and 35 units and evacuated all passengers from the train. They also extricated one person trapped inside the affected wagon. EFE
