Israel attacks largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon

Beirut, Feb 20 (EFE).- Israel attacked the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp on Friday, the largest in Lebanon, located in the south of the country. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed to have targeted facilities used by members of the militant group Hamas.

According to the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA), an Israeli drone launched at least three missiles against the Hattin area inside the Ain el Helu camp, with no further details about the potential target or whether there had been casualties.

The IDF confirmed the attack in a brief message on its X account, stating that it was directed against a Hamas headquarters.

In Nov. 2025, another Israeli attack on the same camp, located in the coastal city of Sidon, killed 13 people.

At that time, Israel claimed that its projectiles had hit a Hamas training camp and accused the group of preparing its members to carry out terrorist attacks against Israel.

However, Hamas called these statements “pure inventions” and said the attacked facilities were actually a sports field frequented by young camp residents, several of whom were present at the time of the bombing.

Although bombings of Lebanese territory have continued despite the ceasefire in place since late 2023, they are primarily directed at Hezbollah.

Much less frequently, Palestinian groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad (PIJ) are attacked, the latter supposedly the target of an attack on Feb. 15 that killed four people in a vehicle traveling near the border between Lebanon and Syria. EFE
