Washington/Madrid, Mar 4 (EFE).- White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday that Spain agreed to cooperate with the United States military, which the Spanish Foreign Ministry denied.
”I think they heard the president’s message yesterday loud and clear. It is my understanding over the past several hours they’ve agreed to cooperate with the US military,” Leavitt told a news briefing.
”I know that the US military is coordinating with their counterparts in Spain. But the president expects all of our European allies, of course, to cooperate in this long-sought-after mission,” she added.
However, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares denied the claims shortly after.
”I categorically deny it. The Spanish government’s position on the war in the Middle East, the bombings in Iran, and the use of our bases has not changed one iota,” Albares asserted in an interview on SER radio.
On Monday, President Donald Trump threatened a trade embargo against Spain for its refusal to allow the US military to use its facilities at Spanish bases for operations against Iran. EFE
