Suspect in fatal stabbing of Singaporean woman appears in court

Murcia, Spain, Apr 19 (EFE).- The man arrested in connection with the alleged fatal stabbing of a 39-year-old Singaporean woman, whose body was found in a truck parking lot, appeared in a Spanish court on Friday.

The suspect, who is also from Singapore, was dressed in sweatpants and a T-shirt as he arrived at the courthouse, handcuffed in a Benemérita van.

Two civil guards escorted him out of the vehicle and placed him in the cells of the judicial offices before he testified.

The victim, identified as Audrey Fang, had checked into a luxury hotel in Jávea, Alicante, on April 4, intending to stay until April 10 before returning to her country via Barcelona.

However, on April 9, she left the hotel alone in the afternoon, and her whereabouts remained unknown since then.

Her body was discovered around 7 a.m. on April 10 in a truck parking lot in Abanilla, Murcia, about 120 km south of Javea, although her identity was not initially known.

The Civil Guard reported that police collected CCTV footage from cameras at the hotel and discovered that she was picked up by a vehicle when she left the hotel on the day before her death.

“The investigation is in a first phase and no hypothesis regarding the motive for the crime has been ruled out,” the Civil Guard said.

Hotel staff alerted the Guardia Civil in Javea – a tourist resort on the Costa Blanca in Alicante – after cleaners noticed that the woman was missing even though she had left all her personal belongings in her room.

It has not been revealed whether there was a familial relationship between the victim and the alleged perpetrator, whether the crime occurred at the location where the body was found, or if the body was moved there after death.

A member of Fang’s family told EFE on Tuesday that the Singaporean diplomatic corps in Madrid had reported the situation to police in the Spanish capital shortly after the disappearance. EFE
