Sports Desk, June 21 (EFE).- Second half strikes from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez helped Argentina begin their title defense in the Copa America with a 2-0 win over brave Canada in Atalanta on Thursday.
After a barren first half, during which both sides came close to scoring a few times, Manchester City forward Alvarez put Argentina ahead in the 49th minute but the reigning champions had to wait until late into the game to extend their lead.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi, playing his 35th match in the Copa, the most by any player, showed an unusual lack of precision in front of the goal, failing to convert from one-on-one at least twice in the game.
The star man finally created an impact by setting up substitute Martínez to score the side’s second goal two minutes from time that settled the tie. EFE
