Seoul, Jul 24 (EFE).- A balloon carrying waste sent by Pyongyang to South Korea landed Wednesday at the Presidential Office in Seoul, according to the Presidential Security Service.
The service, cited by the Yonhap news agency, said fallen debris was discovered on the grounds of the presidential complex located in the Yongsan district of the North Korean capital.
“An investigation carried out by the chemical, biological and radiological response team has shown that the contents (of the balloon) did not present danger or contamination, so it has been discarded,” said the service, adding that it is still “pending the situation in cooperation with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.”
As it has been doing frequently since May, North Korea sent balloons with garbage early Wednesday that were initially detected floating over the north of Gyeonggi province, which surrounds Seoul, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In the last two months, Pyongyang has sent some 3,000 balloons full of garbage to protest anti-regime propaganda leaflets sent by activists from South Korea.

These actions, along with attempts to interfere with the GPS system around the Korean Peninsula by Pyongyang, led Seoul to suspend on Jun. 4 the treaty to reduce military tension in border areas it had signed with North Korea in 2018.
After the pact was suspended, the South Korean army reinstalled its loudspeakers with propaganda criticizing the regime on the border and has been making broadcasts in response to the balloon releases.
Relations between the countries are experiencing one of their worst moments, especially after the failure in 2019 of the dialogue on denuclearization between Pyongyang and Washington.
Since then, North Korea has declared Seoul its “main enemy” and has chosen to strengthen relations with countries such as Russia. EFE
