Man charged with attempted murder after girl stabbed in London tourist spot

London, Aug 13 (EFE).- A 32-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following the stabbing of an 11-year-old girl in Leicester Square, London’s Metropolitan Police reported on Tuesday.

Police were called to the tourist and theater hotspot in the capital at 11.34 am on Monday, where the girl was found with stab wounds. She was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The Met identified the suspect, also charged with possession of a bladed article, as Ioan Pintaru, of no fixed address.

He was remanded in custody to appear Tuesday morning in the Westminster Magistrates Court.

Initially it was thought that the girl’s 34-year-old mother had also been injured in the attack, but blood from her daughter’s injuries was mistaken for injuries of her own, the Met said.

The police did not offer a motive for the attack.

Thes stabbing came after another incident in Southport, northwest England, on July 29 when three girls were killed and 10 other people injured in a knife attack in a recreation center.

The incident sparked far-right and anti-immigration groups to riot in British cities after fake news and disinformation spread on social media claiming the 17-year-old suspect Axel Rudakubana, a British citizen born in Wales to Rwandan parents, was a Muslim asylum seeker. EFE
