Sinner shines in Melbourne: World No.1 sweeps Jarry to begin title defense

Sports Desk, Jan 13 (EFE).- Reigning Australian Open champion and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner kicked off his title defense with a commanding victory over Nicolas Jarry, defeating the Chilean in straight sets 7-6(2), 7-6(5), 6-1 to reach the second round.

The Italian, riding a 15-match winning streak, showed no signs of rust in 2025.

Jarry, known for his aggressive serve-and-volley style, made life difficult for Sinner early on, forcing errors and even earning two break points in the opening set.

However, Sinner’s poise in crucial moments made the difference, as he swept both tiebreaks with precision.

The top seed, who claimed his first Grand Slam title in Melbourne last year, has carried his blistering form into 2025. His winning streak includes titles at the US Open, ATP Finals, and Davis Cup.

After winning the first two sets, Jarry crumbled in the third, unable to keep up with Sinner’s pace. The Chilean, who beat Sinner back in 2019, had his chances early but faltered under pressure. Once two sets down, he looked resigned to defeat.

Sinner, now the youngest Australian Open champion since Novak Djokovic in 2008, advances to face either Japan’s Taro Daniel or Australia’s Tristan Schoolkate in the second round.

For Jarry, the wait for Grand Slam success continues. He has now lost in the first round of a major six times and has only reached the second round once in his career. EFE
