Washington, Aug 4 (EFE).— US President Donald Trump on Monday voiced his support for actress Sydney Sweeney following backlash over her recent American Eagle advertisement, which plays on the words “jeans” and “genes” and has been criticized for promoting white supremacist undertones.
“Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves’. Go get ‘em Sydney!” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump had already expressed enthusiasm for the campaign, saying he “loved the ad” after learning from a reporter that Sweeney is a registered Republican voter.
“She’s a registered Republican?” Trump said, expressing surprise. “Oh, now I love her ad. Is that right? You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans. That’s one I wouldn’t have known, but I’m glad you told me that. If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.”
The ad features Sweeney in a campaign for American Eagle, using the tagline: “Sydney Sweeney has good jeans… and she got them from AE (American Eagle)”.
The wordplay, blending “jeans” (denim) with “genes” (hereditary traits), sparked criticism for seemingly endorsing the idea that certain genetic traits, like being white and blonde, are inherently superior.
American Eagle responded with a clarification that jeans meant jeans only. “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and was always about jeans,” the company said in a post on Instagram.
“Her jeans. Her story. We will continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
In the same Truth Social post, Trump also lashed out at luxury carmaker Jaguar for “a stupid and seriously WOKE advertisement.”
That reignited his feud with pop star Taylor Swift, saying that “I can’t stand her (HATE!)” and was “NO LONGER HOT” ever since he publicly criticized her.
Swift’s support for former Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s rival in the 2024 presidential election, has been a sore point for the Republican leader.
“The tide has seriously turned — Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” EFE
