London, Jan 5 (EFE).– Manchester United announced on Monday the dismissal of head coach Rúben Amorim following a string of poor results.
Amorim, who joined the club in November 2024, oversaw United’s worst-ever Premier League season last year, finishing 15th.
In addition, the club was eliminated in the fifth round of the FA Cup, the quarter-finals of the League Cup, and, although it reached the Europa League final, it lost to Tottenham Hotspur making it the first time since 2014 that it did not compete in Europe.
Despite this providing an opportunity to focus their efforts on the Premier League and deliver a different performance than the previous season, United currently sits in fifth place with 31 points, 17 points behind the league’s leaders.
The decision to sack Amorim came after Sunday’s draw against Leeds United, which capped a run of three draws, one win, and one defeat in the last five matches.

During his time at United, the team showed little improvement compared to the Erik Ten Hag era, and his work has been heavily criticized for his inflexibility in changing the 3-4-3 system with which he achieved success at Sporting Lisbon but that has barely worked for this team.
Despite the poor results of the previous season, the board backed Amorim on the acquisitions of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Sanne Lammens, for a total of nearly 200 million euros ($233.66 million).
These signings, however, did not change the fortunes of a team that has not won the Premier League since 2013 and the Champions League since 2008.
Since Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013, United has had six permanent managers.
In addition, the Manchester club, which already paid more than 10 million euros to sign Amorim from Sporting in November 2024, will have to pay the full severance package to the Portuguese coach, whose contract was due to expire in the summer of 2027. EFE
