Chelsea appoint Rosenior as new head coach after Maresca exit

London, Jan 5 (EFE).- Chelsea have appointed Liam Rosenior as their new head coach, replacing Enzo Maresca, who left the club on Jan. 1, the London side said on Tuesday.

Rosenior, 41, had been coaching French club Strasbourg until Tuesday.

Strasbourg share ownership ties with Chelsea, a link that helped accelerate negotiations and enabled the English coach to travel to London to finalise the agreement.

Rosenior, who had earlier acknowledged talks and said he would “probably” become Chelsea’s new coach, has signed a contract running until 2032.

“I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed Head Coach of Chelsea Football Club. This is a club with a unique spirit and a proud history of winning trophies,” Rosenior said.

‘My job is to protect that identity and create a team that reflects these values in every game we play as we continue winning trophies. To be entrusted with this role means the world to me, and I want to thank all involved for the opportunity and faith in undertaking this job. I will give everything to bring the success this club deserves.”

Maresca left Chelsea at the start of the year following a poor run of results, just one win in seven matches, and disagreements with the board, whom he accused of interfering in his decisions.

After the Italian’s departure, Callum Macfarlane took charge on an interim basis and guided Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Manchester City, with Enzo Fernández scoring a late equaliser at the Etihad Stadium.

Rosenior joined Strasbourg in 2024 and led the club to qualification for the Conference League.

He has previously managed Derby County on an interim basis and Hull City, and enjoyed a lengthy playing career in England with Hull City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Reading. EFE
