Search on for 24 missing after fishing boat capsizes in Indonesia

Jakarta, Mar 13 (EFE).- The Indonesian authorities on Wednesday continued looking for 24 missing fishermen after their boat capsized during the weekend near South Sulawesi province.

So far, two people have reportedly died in the incident while 11 have been found alive.

The National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) has been coordinating the search and rescue operation in which several local groups and regional authorities are involved, the agency said in a statement.

The operation is centered around the waters around Selayar, south of Sulawesi, in central Indonesia, where the ship with 37 fishermen on board sank on Saturday morning due to bad water while going from Jakarta to Lombok.

Rescue teams found ten survivors and two dead on Monday, while a day later they found another person alive, according to a statement by emergency teams on Tuesday.

Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia due to precarious infrastructure, overloading of passengers and goods, lax compliance with safety regulations and inclement weather. EFE
