Sao Paulo, Dec 10 (EFE).- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, successfully underwent surgery for brain hemorrhage caused by a fall in October and was recovering in the intensive care unit (ICU), Syrian-Lebanese Hospital in Sao Paulo – where he was admitted – reported Tuesday.
The 79-year-old leader visited a medical center in Brasilia on Monday night for a headache and, after an MRI scan, an intracranial hemorrhage was detected.
The head of state was then rushed to the city of Sao Paulo, where he underwent surgery to drain the hematoma detected inside his head.
The hospital said in a statement that the surgery went without problems and the president was doing well and kept under observation in the ICU.
It further said that a press conference would be held with the doctors for an update on Lula’s health.
It added that the hemorrhage was the result of a fall suffered by Lula on Oct. 19 in the Alvorada Palace, official residence of the Brazilian president, in Brasilia.
During the following weeks he underwent several check-ups without major problems, although the doctors prevented him from traveling by plane for a while as a precaution.
He even had to cancel his trip to Russia around the end of October for the BRICS summit.
Lula, in power from Jan. 1, 2023, has had a busy past few weeks, hosting the G20 leaders summit in Rio de Janeiro in November and traveling to Montevideo for the Summit of Mercosur Heads of State in early December. EFE
