The former champion, who aspired to a double victory no one has achieved in Flushing Meadows since Roger Federer, could not deal with the performance of the Russian, who will face Serbian Novak Djokovic in the final.

The 20-year-old Spaniard lost in the semifinals 7-6(3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 after an exciting match of three hours and 19 minutes.

Winner of the US Open in 2021, Medvedev prevented the Alcaraz-Djokovic final everyone was expecting and will be the last person standing between the Serb and a 24th Grand Slam and equal the record of Margaret Court.

Djokovic, who next week will be the new world No. 1, also has pending accounts with Medvedev, who defeated him in the title match in 2021 and frustrated his historic attempt to achieve the four Grand Slam in a calendar year.

Alcaraz arrived in New York with high spirits after his unforgettable title at Wimbledon (against Djokovic), accumulated an impressive 24-1 in Grand Slam matches since last year’s US Open (the Australian Open he did not play it due to injury) and had only dropped one set on his way to these semifinals.

The Spaniard had also beaten Medvedev twice this year in the Indian Wells final and the Wimbledon semifinals.

But this time he knelt before a Medvedev almost touched by the gods and who is the only one on the men’s circuit who can currently discuss the dominance of Alcaraz and Djokovic.

The game featured many celebrities in the stands including NBA stars Kevin Durant and Jimmy Butler, football legend Tom Brady and Hollywood stars Charlize Theron and Ben Stiller. EFE
