Melbourne, Australia, Jan 22 (EFE).- Carlos Alcaraz rediscovered his best form as he defeated Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Monday.
The Spanish second seed took just an hour and 49 minutes to eliminate his unseeded opponent to book a quarter final clash against German sixth seed Alexander Zverev.
The German was made to work much harder to earn his spot in the last eight, as Britain’s 19th seeded Cameron Norrie pushed him all the way in a five-set epic that was settled by a tie-break in the final frame.
Third seeded Daniil Medvedev also sealed his progress into the quarter finals with a 6-3, 7-6, 5-7, 6-1 victory against Portugal’s unseeded Nuno Borges.
Medvedev will face Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, seeded 9th, after he beat France’s Arthur Cazaux in straight sets.
In the women’s draw, China’s 12th seeded Qinwen Sheng eased past French Oceane Dodin 6-0, 6-3, to set up a clash against Anna Kalinskaya, after the Russian beat Italy’s 26th seed Jasmine Paolini in straight sets.
Viktoria Azarenka became the latest star name to be eliminated after the 18th seed and two-time champion in Melbourne narrowly lost to Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska 7-6, 6-4.
Yastremka will face Czechia’s Linda Noskova, after she had a walkover when another heavyweight, former number 3 Elina Svitolina, was forced to retire with a back injury after just three games. EFE
