Switzerland into last 8 with classy 2-0 win over Italy

Berlin, Jun 29 (EFE).- Switzerland eliminated reigning champions Italy from Euro 2024 with a dominant Round of 16 victory at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin on Saturday.

Switzerland took a thoroughly deserved lead when Ruben Vargas found Remo Freuler in the box for the midfielder to fire a deflected shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The impressive Swiss were outclassing the disappointing Azzurri, and could easily have gone into half-time with a bigger lead if it weren’t for the Italian goalkeeper.

They doubled their advantage less than 30 seconds after the break, when Vargas curled a beautiful effort into the top corner.

Italy failed to muster any real response, as Switzerland comfortably saw out the win.

The Swiss move on to the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of England vs Slovakia. EFE
