Iran rules out new talks with US for now

Tehran, Apr 20 (EFE).- Iran said Monday it currently has no plans to participate in a new round of negotiations with the United States, despite Washington confirming that its negotiating team will travel to Pakistan.

«At the moment, we have no plans for the next round of negotiations and no decision has been made,» Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Bagaei told reporters.

Bagaei accused the US of undermining diplomacy through what he described as contradictory actions and repeated violations of the ceasefire.

«The United States, by adopting contradictory behavior and continuously violating the terms of the ceasefire, has demonstrated that it is not serious about following the diplomatic process,» he said.

The spokesperson cited the US naval blockade of Iranian ports and ships, as well as the reported attack on an Iranian vessel, as «clear examples of acts of aggression» against the Islamic Republic.

These actions, he said, have «intensified mistrust» toward Washington, noting that the US has allegedly attacked Iran twice in less than nine months during ongoing negotiations, killing senior officials and civilian leaders.

Uncertainty now surrounds the second round of talks scheduled for Tuesday in Pakistan.

The White House has announced that a US delegation led by Vice President JD Vance will travel to Pakistan, while also warning of possible further attacks if negotiations fail to produce progress.

Tehran has conditioned any direct contacts on the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports, which it has described as «illegal and criminal.»

US President Donald Trump has also warned that if Tehran does not accept Washington’s proposed agreement, the US could destroy «every single power plant and bridge» in Iran.

Trump issued a similar threat before both sides agreed on a two-week truce on Apr. 8, set to expire on Apr. 22.

Washington and Tehran remain locked in a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear program, the two main obstacles that prevented an agreement during the first round of talks last week.

Tensions escalated further after the US reportedly attacked and seized an Iranian cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman overnight, which Tehran described as a violation of the ceasefire.

The Iranian Army said it would respond to the vessel’s capture «soon.»

During the first round of negotiations held Apr. 11 in Pakistan, Iran did not confirm its participation until the last moment. The talks lasted 21 hours but ended without an agreement. EFE
