UN: 196 killed in Gaza in 6 months despite ceasefire

Jerusalem, July 1 (EFE).- At least 196 people were killed within a span of nearly six months in Israeli attacks carried out near areas where its military forces are still deployed in Gaza, the United Nations and NGOs present in Gaza said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

«Between 10 October 2025 and early April 2026, the UN verified the killing of 196 Palestinians, including 18 women and 43 children, in Israeli attacks reported near areas where Israeli forces are deployed,» the statement said, pointing out that many of them were reportedly killed while «moving through areas lacking clear demarcation on the ground.»

An average seven Palestinian children were killed every month in Gaza despite the entry into force of the ceasefire on Oct. 10.

The so-called ‘yellow line’, where Israeli troops remain deployed and occupy around 70 percent of Gaza’s 365 square kilometers (141 square miles), is only discontinuously marked with concrete blocks of that color and piles of earth, making it very difficult for Palestinians to know its exact course.

«Access to essential services is already strained by the insufficient entry of critical goods into Gaza. This situation is further compounded by the continued expansion and shifting of deployment lines,» the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stressed in the text.

The Palestinian health ministry has recorded a total of 1,053 Palestinian deaths since the ceasefire began, in a steady stream of Israeli airstrikes and sniper fire that occur almost daily.

According to the ministry, another 3,400 Palestinians have been injured since the ceasefire, bringing the total to more than 173,500 injured since the start of Israel’s offensive following Hamas’ attacks in October 2023, and to around 73,060 deaths in an offensive internationally described by different associations as «genocide.» EFE
