Dhaka, Oct 17 (EFE).- At least 10 people were killed when a fire broke out at a tourist resort in Bangladesh’s beach town of Cox’s Bazar early on Saturday, the Fire Service said.

Fire Service spokesperson Talha Bin Zasim told EFE that the fire broke out at around 7 am and quickly spread through Tup Tup Resort near Inani Beach in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

Two firefighting units rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control at around 8:15 am.

“Our firefighters recovered six bodies from different rooms of the resort and four bodies from a bathroom. Some of the bodies were burnt beyond recognition,” he said.

Zasim said the death toll could rise as the search for bodies continued.

“We still have two areas of the resort to check. We are afraid there could be more bodies,” he added.

Zasim said some of the injured were taken to different hospitals by local residents immediately after the fire broke out, adding that their number could not be ascertained immediately.

Cox’s Bazar is home to hundreds of hotels and resorts along an approximately 80-kilometer (50-mile) stretch, widely regarded as the world’s longest natural sea beach.

The area is also close to the world’s largest refugee settlement, where more than 1 million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar have been living for nearly a decade.

Fires are common in Bangladesh, where poor safety standards often result in casualties. EFE
