Washington, Nov 4 (EFE).- United States President Donald Trump admitted Wednesday that the war against Iran prompted the Republicans’ defeat in the midterm elections, but asserted that, if he had to do it again, he would attack the Islamic Republic again.

When asked about the criticism by Vice President J.D. Vance against the war with Iran, Trump said, «It’s largely true,» adding that «it drove the gasoline up a little bit, short term.”

However, he added about the war: “If I had to do it again, I’d do it again, because long term it’s the only answer. We can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon.”

Trump has maintained that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon justified the February 28 joint strikes with Israel, which triggered an eight-month conflict that continues to disrupt trade in the Strait of Hormuz.

The president reappeared on Wednesday after the elections during an event to unveil renovations to the White House Ballroom, shortly after Vance took to social media to blame the unpopular war in Iran for the Republicans’ resounding defeat.

“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” Vance wrote in a lengthy post on X, hours after projections confirmed large Democratic majorities in the Senate and the House of Representatives, complicating the two years remaining in Trump’s term. EFEasb/mcd
