Paris, June 3 (EFE).- Italy’s Jannik Sinner dropped his first set at Roland Garros on Sunday on his way to the quarterfinals, where he will face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, while world no. 3 Carlos Alcaraz raised his level to set up a duel against Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.

There were no surprises in the women’s draw, with world no. 1 Iga Swiatek, Czech Marketa Vondrousova and world no. 3 Coco Gauff, of the United States, advancing to the quarterfinals.

World no. 2 Sinner had to recover from the trap set by Frenchman Corentin Moutet, who took a set from the Italian before losing 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.

Moutet, the last Frenchman left in the men’s draw, played a tough game but eventually proved no match for the Italian.

Sinner’s next rival will be the 10th seed Dimitrov, who beat eighth-seeded Polish Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(5), 6-4, 7-6(3) on the way to his first Roland Garros quarterfinal, the first Bulgarian to do so.

Alcaraz overcame Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, who played below the expected level and ended up losing 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.

The Spaniard reached the French Open quarterfinals for the third consecutive time, something that only other eight tennis players have achieved before turning 22.

Tsitispas, Alcaraz’s opponent in the quarterfinal, in recent weeks has overcome a slump in play to win the Monte Carlo Masters 1,000 and reach the final in Barcelona.

In Paris, he retained his form to reach the quarterfinals for the fifth consecutive time after defeating Italian Matteo Arnaldi 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-2.

In the women’s draw, Swiatek reached the quarterfinals in search of her third consecutive title in the French capital and her fourth in total.

She beat Russian Ana Potapova 6-0, 6-0 in just 40 minutes, the fastest win of her career.

She will now face an in-form Vondrousova, a finalist in Paris in 2019 and winner of the last Wimbledon, who overcame the challenge posed by Serbian Olga Danilovic to win 6-4, 6-2.

Gauff also did not falter on her way to the quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive year and defeated Italian Elisabetta Cociaretto, a debutant in the round of 16 of a Grand Slam, 6-1, 6-2.

Her rival will be Tunisian Ons Jabeur, who returned to the quarterfinals after beating Danish Clara Tauson 6-4, 6-2. EFE
