China tells US to leave arrogance, cooperate for Gaza ceasefire

Jakarta, Apr 18 (EFE).- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on an official visit to Indonesia, called on the United States Thursday to abandon its arrogance and cooperate with other countries to implement the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip ordered by the United Nations Security Council.

Wang, during a press conference with his Indonesian counterpart, Retno Marsudi, hoped the US would cooperate as a member of the UN in the implementation of the ceasefire under Resolution 2728.

The Chinese minister welcomed the US – which vetoed previous resolutions on Gaza in the Security Council – abstaining last month and allowing the passage of Resolution 2728, but criticized them for considering the resolution non-binding.

“But the US called the resolution ‘non-binding’, and the world was very shocked by what the US said. This shows that to the US, international law is only a tool they use as they want,” Wang said.

Wang called on the US to take the lead as a permanent member of the Security Council and work with the rest of the countries to implement Resolution 2728, which he called “binding to all UN members.”

In his address, Wang also called for an international conference for the recognition of Palestine and advocated a two-state solution to the conflict, while also underlining the possibility of Palestine getting recognition as an official member of the UN.

In recent days, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been on a tour of Europe and is currently in Brussels to try to coordinate the recognition of Palestine as a state and member of the UN.

Israel launched a bloody offensive against the Gaza Strip in October following an attack on its territory by the radical Palestinian group Hamas in which some 1,200 were killed and more than 200 were taken hostage.

More than 33,800 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the Israeli offensive against the Palestinian enclave, and about thirty children have died of acute malnutrition amid a conflict that threatens to spread across the Middle East following Israeli-Iranian exchanges of attacks. EFE
