Tropical storm Yagi kills at least 4 in Thailand

Bangkok, Sep 11 (EFE).- At least four people died in northern Thailand due to rains caused by tropical storm Yagi, which was downgraded from a typhoon after passing through Vietnam, Thai authorities reported Wednesday.

The rainfall has caused landslides, flash floods and floods in several northern provinces in the country, the country’s relief department said.

A landslide in the town of Mae Ai, in the north of the tourist province of Chiang Mai, has left two dead, four missing and one injured; while two died in the neighboring province of Chiang Rai, the department’s report said.

“The situation is under close surveillance, with moderate to light rains. The general water levels of the main rivers are rising,” the agency said.

Dozens were trapped in houses and temples in Chiang Rai awaiting the arrival of emergency teams, public channel Thai PBS reported.

The meteorology department said heavy rains are expected until Tuesday of next week and warned of possible flash floods.

Yagi, the strongest typhoon this year in Asia, hit Saturday in northern Vietnam and killed at least 141 deaths and 59 missing in the country, where it arrived after killing 20 people in its passage through China and the Philippines. EFE
