Al-Sharaa vows to rebuild Syria, calls for stability on 1st anniversary of Assad’s ouster

Damascus (EFE).- Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, on the first anniversary of the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime on Monday, promised that the whole country would be rebuilt following the devastation caused by the civil war, and called on the citizens to join efforts to help consolidate stability in the country.

“From north to south, east to west, God willing, we will restore Syria as a strong nation, rebuild it worthy of its past and present, honor its heritage, rebuild it in obedience to God, support the oppressed, and ensure justice among the people,” al-Sharaa said during his speech at the iconic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus after attending the morning prayers.

Al-Sharaa, who led the Islamist alliance Levant Liberation Agency against al-Assad, called on the people to unify their efforts to help ensure stability and build a strong country during the current transitional phase in Syria under him.

He also praised the fighters who entered the capital exactly a year ago, marking the end of more than half a century of the al-Assad family in power, and he warned that preserving what was achieved with this military operation was among the main duties for all Syrians.

Al-Sharaa was set to make another address to mark the anniversary of al-Assad’s ouster later in the day at 6pm local time.

His speech is expected to be broadcast live on giant screens placed across the city, as part of the official agenda of commemorative activities, which also includes military parades, exhibitions and concerts. EFE
