Tokyo, Apr 20 (EFE).- A shallow magnitude-7.5 earthquake struck off the coast of central Japan on Monday, prompting tsunami warnings, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The quake occurred at 4.53pm off the coast of Sanriku at a depth of 10 kilometers, with tsunami warnings and advisories issued for coastal areas from Hokkaido to Fukushima prefecture, with waves potentially reaching 3 meters in height, the JMA reported.
It is currently unknown whether there has been any damage as a result of the earthquake, while authorities have urged residents in the affected areas to evacuate to safe locations.
The Japanese government has formed an emergency response team to work together to provide all necessary support, the office of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated on X.
Japan sits on the so-called Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active zones, and experiences earthquakes relatively frequently. EFE
