Vatican City, Oct. 13 (EFE). – Pope Leo XIV’s surgery to remove a lung nodule was successful, the Vatican press office reported Tuesday.
“The surgery was completed successfully, within the expected timeframe and as planned, and the Holy Father has returned to his room,” read the Vatican statement sent to the media.
The surgery on the 71-year-old pontiff was performed at Gemelli Hospital in Rome by a medical team led by Stefano Margaritora, an expert thoracic surgeon.
Leo XIV, who underwent surgery on Tuesday afternoon, was admitted to the Gemelli Polyclinic shortly after 1:00 p.m. local time, as he walked in calmly along with his two secretaries and his personal physician.
The pope announced on Sunday, after the Angelus prayer, that he would undergo this procedure to remove a localized nodule in one of his lungs, detected at a very early stage.
The operation took place less than a month before his planned trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from Nov. 6 to 17. EFE
